The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada wishes to extend its warmest thanks to those who took the time to participate in the consultation on the review of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), the private sector privacy law. We have received 60 submissions from a wide range of associations, organizations and privacy stakeholders, as well as from individuals.
The valuable comments and observations provided in these documents will guide the development of a discussion paper to be tabled with the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics at the time of the statutory legislative review.
According to a recent survey, nearly 90% of Canadians believe that existing legislation on the protection of personal information should be updated regularly to keep pace with technological advances. This consultation provides an opportunity for our Office to gather views from various sectors. Ultimately, it will help strengthen the Act and may even inspire the much-needed reform of the Privacy Act, and further assist in our role as defender of individual privacy rights.
