OPC publishes updated advice on faxing personal information

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) has published updated advice on the risks of faxing personal information.

Despite digital advancements in health, finance, law and other sectors, breaches of personal information continue to occur because of the use of traditional fax machines.

While the OPC recommends against using fax machines to transmit personal information in favour of more secure alternatives, organizations that continue to use this older technology can take steps to reduce the risk that sensitive information will fall into the wrong hands.
