Privacy regulators to discuss findings of joint investigation into ChatGPT

The Privacy Commissioner of Canada and provincial privacy regulators from Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta will hold a press conference to discuss the findings of their joint investigation into OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The joint investigation examined OpenAI’s compliance with Canadian privacy laws, including whether the company had obtained valid and meaningful consent for the collection, use, and disclosure of Canadians’ personal information.

Participants at the press conference will be:

  • Philippe Dufresne, Privacy Commissioner of Canada
  • Naomi Ayotte, Vice-President and Commissioner of the Oversight Division, Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec
  • Michael Harvey, Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia
  • Diane McLeod, Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta

Information about the investigative findings will be available at the news conference and posted on the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada website at approximately 11:00 am ET on May 6, 2026. Embargoed copies are not available in advance.
