  • On October 9, 2024, during debate in the House regarding ETHI’s report on facial recognition technology and AI, MP Brassard noted that the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has frequently commented on the need to “update the Privacy Act to recognize that privacy is a fundamental right”, and MP Brassard asked if the government has any plans to do so.
    • During the same debate, MP Brassard further noted that “the Privacy Commissioner also has asked for the ability to levy fines if the government is not following the privacy laws of this country.”

  • On June 6, 2025, during the second reading debate on Bill C-4, the Making Life More Affordable for Canadians Act, MP Cooper stated that he supports the substance of part 4 of the bill, which would amend the Canada Elections Act, and which he said would put “a uniform system in place with respect to privacy laws falling exclusively under federal jurisdiction, as they pertain to federal political parties.”
  • On December 10, 2024, during ETHI’s study on the wind-up of TikTok Canada, MP Cooper asked about the status and scope of our Office’s TikTok investigation.
  • During the House debate on Bill C-27, MP Cooper was concerned that the bill did not, at that time, characterize privacy as a fundamental right, a right which MP Cooper said “goes to the core of who we are as individuals and is essential to the enjoyment of fundamental freedoms”.

  • On August 12, 2025, MP Sari was part of a group of MPs who met with IBM Canada to discuss AI – more specifically ISED’s "Voluntary Code of Conduct on the Responsible Development and Management of Advanced Generative AI Systems" which was published in September 2023
  • On June 5, 2025, during the debate on second reading for Bill C-2, the Strong Borders Act, MP Sari described the bill as “a clear and effective response to very real threats: drug trafficking, organized crime, money laundering and weaknesses in our intelligence system.” He further said:
    • Amendments to the PCMLTFA, as well as cross-border information-sharing mechanisms, “will give our police officers the tools they need to take action” against large-scale fraud and money laundering schemes; and
    • Amendments to the Canada Post Corporation Act will “finally give [police] the means to do something about [prohibited substances being sent via mail].” He further said “the Canada Post Corporation Act has to be amended to allow suspicious mail to be opened within a strict legal framework.”
  • On May 30, 2025, during debate on the address in reply to the Speech from the Throne, he identified public safety and artificial intelligence as the two issues of greatest concern to him.
    • MP Sari said AI can speed up access to government programs, cut red tape, provide faster and more personalized services to citizens, improve infrastructure planning and emergency management. He said we must build AI that is ethical, inclusive, transparent and accessible to vulnerable regions.
