Privacy Act Bulletins are intended to offer lessons learned, best practices and other important privacy news, trends and information related to privacy protection in the federal government. We encourage you to share this information with employees across your organization, including teams involved in technology, communications and program delivery.

This month, OPC staff are offering two webinars to help answer those questions, providing important information about PIAs, and about the privacy principles that you should consider when assessing your programs and activities.

What’s a PIA? – March 24, 2026
This session will discuss Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs), including:
- When a PIA is required
- How to prepare a PIA
- Important elements to include in a PIA
The session is open to all Government of Canada personnel, to help spread awareness and knowledge about the value and importance of PIAs. This will include learning how to develop a fulsome PIA that will help to mitigate risks and protect the personal information of Canadians. The session is 90 minutes, including ample time for participants to pose questions to subject matter experts.

The Privacy Principles – March 26, 2026
This session will discuss fundamental privacy principles and how institutions should apply them when assessing their programs and activities within a PIA.
The session is open to all Government of Canada personnel, to provide a deeper understanding of how to identify and mitigate risks to personal information. Participants can expect to receive actionable advice on how to ensure that their programs and activities protect the privacy of Canadians. The session is 90 minutes, including ample time for participants to pose questions to subject matter experts.
The session will be virtual, via Teams.

New terms added to the Personal Information and Privacy Glossary
The recently updated Personal Information and Privacy Glossary now contains the English and French terms for 375 concepts related to privacy. This important resource is the result of a collaboration between the Translation Bureau and Public Services and Procurement Canada’s Access to Information and Privacy Directorate, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat. This glossary has been updated to add new terms such as de-identified information and anonymized information, deepfakes and deceptive design patterns.
