Collection agency corrects inaccurate information
Settled case summary #10
Complaint
After several unsuccessful attempts by his lawyer to have inaccurate information held by a collection agency corrected, the complainant approached our Office. He had paid off a debt a number of years earlier but the collection agency had not reported this to the credit bureaux. As a result, the complainant was having difficulty securing credit.
Outcome
The collection agency had no record of the lawyer's letters regarding this matter. However, after receiving notice from our Office, and yet another letter from the lawyer, the agency looked into the complainant's file and confirmed that the debt had been paid off. As a result, the agency notified the credit bureaux accordingly, and the complainant's credit files were amended.
The complaint was settled during the course of the investigation in November 2004.
