Summary
The Dais examined the unique privacy risks Canadian youth face when using generative AI tools, particularly in educational and social media settings. Using a mixed-method research approach including a literature review, expert interviews, and case studies, the report assesses existing policy frameworks, identifies gaps in youth privacy protections, and identifies best practices for policymakers, technologists, educators, and parents to mitigate risks and enhance youth privacy.
Along with the report and webinar panel event, the Dais produced two infographic tools - one highlighting best practices for technologists, privacy practitioners and policymakers governing and developing generative AI tools, and the other providing basic information and tips for educators, parents and guardians on how to use and teach youth how to use generative AI tools safely. This research serves as a snapshot of the current landscape of how youth use generative AI tools both in education settings and leisurely. The report and practical infographic tools provide relevant actors with knowledge and practical tips related to the development, regulation, and usage of generative AI tools used by youth.
