Ways that the OPC can and cannot help resolve a complaint

The OPC can help to resolve privacy complaints, but, under current privacy laws, it cannot force an organization to take specific actions.

The OPC can make recommendations that could lead to, for example:

  • an employee receiving training
  • a change in process
  • help getting you access to your personal information
  • help getting your personal information corrected
  • an acknowledgement of wrongdoing

The OPC cannot:

  • issue fines or penalties
  • make an organization compensate you for a privacy breach
  • order an organization to release personal information
  • release personal information to a requester

How long it takes

  • The OPC is currently experiencing a high volume of complaints. This has resulted in processing delays of several months.
