AI, privacy, and your business
New technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI are fueled by the massive collection of data, including Canadians’ personal information. It is important that AI and other related emerging technologies be developed and deployed in a responsible, privacy-preserving manner. Prioritizing privacy can promote innovation by building trust in new technologies.
How to apply privacy principles to generative AI technologies
If your organization develops or uses generative AI models, tools, products and services, consult our key privacy principles for AI to ensure that you are protecting the personal information that has been entrusted to you. This includes:
- labelling when generative AI has been used in creating content or making decisions;
- establishing legal authority for collecting and using personal information, and when relying on consent, ensuring that it is valid and meaningful;
- being open and transparent about the way information is used and the privacy risks involved;
- making AI tools explainable to users;
- developing safeguards for privacy rights;
- limiting the sharing of personal, sensitive or confidential information; and
- implementing “privacy by design” into the development of the tools.
Developers are also urged to take into consideration the unique impact that these tools could have on vulnerable groups, including children.
