The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) has received complaints with respect to a notice Bell Canada has issued about customer profiling, online behavioural marketing and personal information. We will be investigating this matter.
The investigation will examine whether the planned changes to how the organization handles the personal information of customers is compliant with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), the federal law which covers the collection, use and disclosure in the course of commercial activities.
Given that the Privacy Commissioner is investigating this matter on behalf of Canadians, individuals do not need to file individual complaints in order to initiate a full investigation.
Once complete, the Commissioner may choose to share the results publicly if she deems it in the public interest to do so.
The OPC is mandated by Parliament to act as an ombudsman and guardian of privacy rights in Canada.
